In 1943, Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Beale) has promised his US allies an invasion of Sicily by July. With Sicily the obvious place to begin an assault on fascist Italy, Director of Naval Intelligence Admiral John Godfrey (Isaacs) is tasked with creating a campaign of deception to convince Nazi Germany that the invasion will instead be aimed at Greece. With most of the Twenty Committee engaged in creating an illusion of non-existent armies, two reserve officers serving on the committee – Squadron Leader Charles Cholmondeley (Macfadyen) and Lieutenant Commander Ewen Montagu (Firth) – propose a gambit involving a corpse carrying false documents. Despite Godfrey’s doubts, Operation Mincemeat is given the go-ahead.
