Loretta Sage (Bullock) is an academic who has parlayed the research she did with her late husband, an archaeologist, into a successful career as an author of romance adventure novels featuring her alter ego, Dr Angela Lovemore, and heroic adventurer Dash McMahon, embodied by wholesome himbo cover model Alan Caprison (Tatum). Tired of being told to dumb down for book launch audiences and competing with Alan for attention, Loretta announces her intention to kill off Dash between novels at an event for her new novel, The Lost City of D, and almost immediately thereafter is kidnapped by eccentric billionaire Abigail Fairfax (Radcliffe), who is aware that her books are based on genuine research and wants her to help him locate the fabled Crown of Fire in the Lost City, which he has located.
